Welcome to WistfulWindChimes.com !
Hummingbirds bring such delight and fascination to our lives. Their tiny bodies of iridescent plumage and fast beating wings mesmerize us. Their dainty wings move an average of 53 beats per second. Some species my have a wing beat rate of up to 80 per second or as low as 10-15 beats per second. Their heart rate is 1260 beats per minute or as low as 50-180 per minute in some species. Wow! Hard to imagine anything beating that fast! Hummingbirds are astounding travelers. They have been known to fly non-stop across the Gulf of Mexico in the spring. The little hummers work so hard their lifespan on average is only about 3 or 4 years with the record being around 12 years. What special little creatures. Depending on your location hummers will migrate between July and November and return in the spring. Migration is in response to hormonal changes which are triggered by decreasing daylight hours.
Feeding Tips: When feeding your feathered friends make sure to keep their feeder clean and the syrup fresh. The closest solution to natural nectar is 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Boil the water and stir in the sugar and cool before filling the feeder. Refrigerate any remaining solution. Do not add red dye to the food as it may be toxic to the hummingbirds. Your feeder itself will have enough red on it to attract the hummers. Insects are a source of protein for hummingbirds so you do not need to add anything else to your solution. *Note* Do not use honey, bee pollen, etc. as it can cause a fungus to grow on their tongues. The above solution is recommended as it is better for the hummers than commercial nectar. Even if you don’t have hummingbirds darting throughout your garden you can certainly enjoy your feathered friends in the form of a colorful hummingbird wind chime!
