Welcome to WistfulWindChimes.com !
Dolphins have long played a role in mankind dating back to Greek mythology. The Ancient Greeks welcomed them and considered it a good omen for smooth sailing when they were spotted riding in a ship’s wake. Many coins have been found from that time featuring a man or a boy riding on the back of a dolphin. Their acute eyesight, superior hearing, and sense of touch continue to help mankind. Dolphins are often regarded as one of the most intelligent animals on earth. They are social mammals living in schools of about a dozen. They communicate with various clicks, whistles, vocalizations, and ultrasonic sounds. They form bonds with each other leading them to stay with one that is ill or injured. Their main diet is fish and squid and they assist one another in hunting. Play is also important in the life of a dolphin. They play with seaweed, turtles, seabirds, other dolphins, ride the waves, surf swells and the waves of boats. Even today dolphins are mans friend and play a large role. Dolphins are used in animal-assisted therapy. They assist with various neurological and psychological problems. Participants working with the dolphins that suffer with depression, Down syndrome, autism and various developmental problems have been known to benefit from this therapy. Of course we can’t forget their involvement in the entertainment industry. We are all familiar with various movies and television series featuring different species of dolphins such as Flipper, SeaQuest DSV, Free Willy, The Day of the Dolphin, as well as others. Although we are not privileged to have a dolphin in our backyard to play with we can enjoy them in diverse shapes such as dolphin wind chimes.
